The Greek philosophers from Ionia upheld that there were four elements, or essences (ousies), in nature: earth, water, fire, and air. Aristotle added ether, which means sky or heaven, that would make it the fifth essence (pemptousia), or quintessence.  In the West it is commonly known as the fifth element. According to Aristotle, this essence exhibits many properties: it is un-generated, un-aging, incorruptible, eternal, constant, and unchanging. Moreover, it is located in the high levels of the heavens where the divinity resides. The Greek philosophers of later antiquity, as well as Byzantines and many Western philosophers, interpreted, amended, and enhanced Aristotle’s theory. As a final result, pemptousia, the fifth element, came to signify the basic essence of every being, the core around which the being’s existence is structured.   Bridging Culture, Science, and Religion Pemptousia.com is committed to addressing the multifaceted challenges of modern society through a holistic approach that integrates culture, science, and religion. A clash between science and theology occurred in the West during the time of the Renaissance (14th century) and even more so during the Age of Enlightenment (18th century) with the development of the natural sciences and modern philosophy. As a result, western Christianity gradually lost its eschatological orientation, took on a worldly character in its governance, cut itself off from the Orthodox Tradition of the East, and became secularized. Due to globalization, this secularization has become worldwide. As a result, people in today’s post-modern world do not understand what the human being really is. The way to true renewal, in all its aspects, is to return to our roots and the ancient Tradition of the Orthodox Church. Orthodoxy is not a religious philosophy or way of thinking but revelation and life standing on the foundations of divine experience, transcendence of the created, and intimacy with the Uncreated. Orthodoxy could be described as the pemptousia that the world yearns for and seeks without completely knowing it, which gives meaning to all science, art, culture, existence, and fills the void of modern man. Through its presence on the Internet and in the spirit of respect for beauty that characterizes it, Pemptousia.com wishes to make a contribution towards offering people a more meaningful life, towards the search for our ontological dimension, and to the awareness of the unfathomable mystery of man who is always—in Christ—in the process of becoming and who is in the image of divine beauty. In the end, “beauty will save the world.”     About the Saint Maxim the Greek Institute Pemptousia.com is a digital publication of the Saint Maxim the Greek Institute for the Research, Preservation, and Promotion of Spiritual and Cultural Traditions (www.stmaximthegreek.org). The Institute's main statutory purpose is the research, recording, preservation, dissemination, and promotion of the World Orthodox Spiritual and Cultural Wealth and Reserve. The Saint Maxim the Greek Institute is a non-profit organization that operates under the auspices of the Holy Great Monastery of Vatopedi, Mount Athos. The resources of the missionary activity of the Institute come from the sponsorships of the Holy Great Monastery of Vatopedi and its friendly institutions, organizations and supporters. Activities of The Saint Maxim the Greek Institute: 1) The main activity of the Institute is the publication and operation of the "missionary" website called "PEMPTOUSIA", which is published in two languages: Greek (www.pemptousia.gr) and English (www.pemptousia.com). It includes web radio (www.pemptousia.fm), web TV (www.pemptousia.tv) and a special children's section entitled "Pemptousia For Children". 2) The Institute also operates the International Church News Agency ORTHODOXIA (www.orthodoxianewsagency.gr) whose purpose is to provide independent, objective and reliable ecclesiastical information. Professional correspondents from around the Orthodox world participate in missions, exclusive interviews, innovative news services and offer high-impact non-profit ecclesiastical journalism. 3) Analogia (www.analogiajournal.com) is a peer-reviewed academic journal in English dedicated to the scholarly exposition and discussion of the theological principles of the Christian Faith. A distinguishing feature of this journal is the effort to advance a dialogue between Orthodox Christianity and the views and concerns of Western modes of theological and philosophical thought. Insofar as the journal seeks to cultivate theological and philosophical discourse and engagement with the urgent challenges and questions posed by modernity, topics from an array of disciplines are also considered, including the natural and social sciences. 4) The Saint Maxim the Greek Institute also founded the “Evgenios Voulgaris” Digital Academy with the aim to offer people today organized knowledge of Orthodox tradition and culture in a continuous dialogue with the achievements of science, the arts, and the spirit through a program of digital seminars that are structured and kept fresh by speakers who are tried and trusted internationally, both in the Church and in the academic realm. 5) The most recent missionary and charitable action of the Saint Maxim the Greek Institute is the Pemptousia Online Social Tutoring Center which represents a pioneering project, a welfare institution of digital ministry, exploiting the good use of technology in people, offering free educational support for high school students from all over Greece and the Greek community around the world. If God wills, this could branch out to the English-speaking world, perhaps in the form of modern and ancient Greek lessons, Greek history, Byzantine Chanting etc. 6) The Saint Maximos the Greek Institute, through Pemptousia and the Evgenios Voulgaris Digital Academy, has organized over 400 digital fellowships with Elder Ephraim, Abbot of the Holy Great Monastery of Vatopedi, and other speakers and audiences from different parts of the world. 7) In addition to the above main activity, the Institute organizes or sponsors international conferences and large-scale events of intellectual, cultural and scientific content and character (POSTHUMANISM AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE, Nov 18-21, 2024, Athens Greece), is a publisher of music publications, produces documentaries, movies and TV programs (MAN OF GOD, SAINT PAISIOS - FROM PHARASA TO HEAVEN – TV SERIES, SAINT PORPHYRIOS THE KAFSOKALYVITE - A SAINT OF OUR TIME - DOCUMENTARY, SAINT JOSEPH THE HESYCHAST DOCUMENTARY, STARRING JONATHAN JACKSON), and also offers scholarships for postgraduate study.
