 https://professors-phds.com/2024/02/27/62280/

Ted Sarandos

Σε συνέντευξή του σχετικά με το «Alexander-the Making of a God», ο Δρ.

LETTER IN ENGLISH

“Alexander-The Making of a God” by NETFLIX: Greeks from all over the world demand corrections for the historical inaccuracies

To Mr. Ted Sarandos

CEO of NETFLIX tsarandos@netflix.com

Dear Mr. Sarandos,

The International Hellenic Association (IHA) is a non-profit, non-political, and non-governmental institution based in Delaware USA. The objectives of IHA are to support Greece and Hellenism on national and cultural issues.

Through this letter, we express to you our disappointment regarding the Netflix film “Alexander-the making of a God”, as it portrays Alexander as a weak, neurotic individual who came from a small, insignificant Macedonian kingdom. It is not mentioned anywhere in the documentary that his campaign was a Pan-Hellenic effort involving almost all the Greek city-states, which had been united by Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great.

In addition, right from the beginning of the so-called documentary, Alexander is presented as a homosexual, which is not supported by the primary sources, historical and literary. To the contrary, according to the historian Plutarch, Alexander had a permanent relation with the Princess of Rhodes Varsini, with whom he had a son, Hercules, in 327 BC. Later, he married Roxanne of the Satrapy of Bactria, Stateira the daughter of a Persian king, and Parysatis, also the daughter of a Persian king. Other historians such as Arrian, Diodorus and Curtius Rufus have written about Alexander, however none of them have mentioned his supposed homosexuality.

We respect the right of film producers to add some fiction in historical films. However, greater attention should be given to historical accuracy since this is a documentary.

Mr. Sarantos, Alexander the Great was a conqueror and ruler of a world empire. He was a military genius whose strategy is still taught today in many military schools around the world. He was a student of the world-famous philosopher Aristotle, and under his pillow he had Homer’s Iliad. As a politician, he succeeded in integrating peoples from a wide variety of cultures and religions. His influence on generations had and still has a huge impact, as he is still regarded as a hero of the highest order. In an interview on the Alexander-The Making of a God film, Dr. Paul Cartledge of Cambridge University, states “we risk distorting history when we prioritize sensationalism over truth.” The historical inaccuracies in this documentary are numerous and it would take many pages to list all of them.

IHA requests from NETFLIX that, at the very least, it removes the scenes that “advertise” an invented homosexuality, which has negatively surprised our members, making them skeptical as to whether or not to continue their membership with NETFLIX. Furthermore, we hope you consider that promoting the agendas of certain communities at the expense of historical accuracy is not going to benefit NETFLIX and its trustworthiness as a producer of documentaries.

Sincerely yours,
