Greece's forgotten crisis

Hellenic American Leadership Council

It doesn't make the front page news around the world anymore, but the refugee crisis in Greece is still just that -- a crisis. Here are the latest figures:

  • In 2017, 11,919 people arrived on Greece’s shores
  • More than 2,400 people landed on Greek shores in August
  • According to the latest UN figures, 62,407 people remain stranded in Greece
  • 15,235 men, women, and children are stuck “in limbo” on overwhelmed Greek islands
Meanwhile, we recently learned that Germany and other countries are planning to send asylum seekers back to Greece.
Greece -- especially its islands -- continues to suffer because of the ongoing influx of refugees and Europe's failure to properly address the crisis. These areas are already strained, with severe lack of proper housing, security and processing procedures, and resources.

While the refugee crisis may have faded from the headlines around the world, it remains incredibly real and urgent, both for Greece and the refugees and migrants.

HALC has an important letter we will deliver to the EU's Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, Dimitris Avramopoulos. Our letter asks that renewed efforts be made to address this crisis and its impact on Greece.
Please, click here to add your name our letter.

Thank you,
